Great Care for the Golden Years

Senior pets have a special place in our hearts, and they’ve earned it! Our furry family members age at a faster rate than we do, and it’s important to keep an eye on the changes that happen as they age. To ensure that your pet has the longest and most comfortable life possible, we strongly recommend semi-annual exams for all senior pets (typically over seven years of age). We also encourage regular bloodwork for our frosty-faced friends. Increased exams and routine diagnostics allow us to closely monitor your senior pet’s health and detect and address any issues that may arise before they become major issues. The sooner an issue is noticed, the easier and less expensive it is to treat, and the better the outcome will be.

Just like human senior citizens, senior pets have age-related concerns. Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD) has symptoms that are similar to dementia in elderly people. Signs of CCD in a senior dog include confusion or disorientation, changes in behavior or habits, and loss of behavior learned earlier in life. While there is no cure for CCD, there are various therapies that can help support aging dogs who are facing CCD.

Age-related aches and pains? You can bet senior pets get them, too! Many animals are very good at masking signs of pain or discomfort, which is why frequent exams are crucial. Here are a few indications that your pet might be having some arthritis pain:

  • Difficulty rising or lying down
  • Reluctance to jump or go upstairs
  • Reduced activity levels
  • Limping, especially after activity
  • Changes in behavior or appetite

But the good news is we have a wide array of tools and treatments to help manage your senior pet’s discomfort. From acupuncture to cold laser therapy and beyond, we’ll formulate a pain management plan that’s tailored to your pet’s needs.
